Diving San Pedro, Belize

Our friends, Darcy and Tom White asked us to join them on a dive trip to San Pedro, Belize on Ambergris Caye, and of course we couldn’t say no! We stayed at a great place right on the beach that was brand new, Caye Caulker. The dives were amazing! I spied a loggerhead turtle and we all got to check her out up close on one dive. We got to pet nurse sharks and saw tons of great fish. We snorkeled in Stingray Alley where there were tons of stingrays and fish. It used to be a favorite place for the fishermen to clean their fishing catch, and the rays and fish would gather for “dinner.” Wally and I went out fishing with a local, and caught tons of fish trolling along the reef. The triggerfish just kept grabbing the hook, and we kept throwing them back - they’re just too pretty to eat. Wally’s big barracuda was a different story. It was delicious cooked up in coconut milk.
Our favorite breakfast was at Esperanza’s Cafe, where she cooked up the best breakfast burritos you’ve ever tasted with your choice of stuffing. Her “cafe” was really just her kitchen, and she always had an inviting smile. Our favorite “nice” restaurant in town was Mango’s, and it was excellent. They had won all kinds of awards for best food in the Caribbean.
The airport at San Pedro was a scream - just a short little runway for the little commuter planes to  land and a tiny little office for the terminal and lots of outdoor benches. There are just a few paved roads in the heart of town, and the rest are dirt and gravel. Golf carts are the best way to get around and we trucked all over the island on ours.
The local beer was Belikin and Lighthouse, and they both were great. My big souvenir for the trip was beer glasses with their logos. They also specialize in rum and the coconut rum was divine! Good thing we were only driving the golf cart!
